Creating a Lasting Legacy for Cancer Care
Boyd Pelley was born in 1912 in George’s Brook, a small community in the Clarenville area. With only a grade five education and a two-week business course “on things he already knew,” he became a successful entrepreneur. He joined his father, Daniel, in running a shipbuilding company, a sawmill operation and the family general store in Port Blandford. After World War II, he and his brothers, Laurence and Barton, invested in hotel, restaurant and building supplies businesses in Lewisporte. They ran these enterprises for many years.
In 1973, at the age of 60, Boyd married Winifred Pike, a widow working at the Bank of Nova Scotia in Gander. In Winnie, Boyd found his soul mate. Her caring spirit, her sense of fun and her outgoing personality lovingly meshed with Boyd’s quiet demeanour. It can be said ofWinnie “she has a generous song in her heart, which can be seen in the smile on her face.”
In 1993, after 20 years of marriage, Boyd was diagnosed with colon cancer. For the next three years he underwent surgeries, treatments and two colostomies. Winifred was constantly by his side, nursing him, encouraging him, and keeping up the light-hearted repartee that was such a large part of their relationship. For Winifred, it was a labour of love. In 1996, before his death from cancer, Boyd set up a Legacy Gift in his Will that provides annual income to the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation.
Boyd and Winifred Pelley have created a powerful legacy through this special gift – truly a gift that will keep on giving.
A Gift of RRSP/RRIF
At the time of your death, your RRSP and RRIF are considered as income and are taxed quite heavily. By designating the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation as a beneficiary of your retirement funds, you will receive a charitable tax receipt to offset any taxes owed. The gift would go directly to charity without being taxed or even needing to go through probate.
A Gift In Your Will
Thank you for considering a gift in your Will to the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation. Every gift makes a difference, no matter how large or small. Consider Some of the Benefits of Making a Gift in Your Will:
- There is no immediate cost to you. So you will not have to worry that the gift will reduce the funds you will have available to live on;
- You can make a bigger gift than you could during your lifetime;
- Gifts made in a Will can reduce, or even eliminate, final income tax that would otherwise reduce what you leave to your heirs.
Give yourself the peace of mind by having your affairs in order. Discuss your options with your family and involve a financial advisor to help you assess all of your assets.
