St. John’s, NL: September 2022 marks the 20th Anniversary of Power of Life, a partnership between Newfoundland Power and the Cancer Care Foundation, that supports cancer care in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Over the last 20 years, Power of Life has raised over $5 million to support cancer patients and their families in our province. Through the generosity of Newfoundland Power’s employees, retirees and customers, Power of Life has helped to provide much-needed equipment to cancer centres across the province including cuddle beds, blanket warmers, chemotherapy recliners, family comfort chairs and vital signs monitors.
To acknowledge and recognize this incredible milestone, Newfoundland Power employees donated $15,000 to the Patient and Family Support Fund. This meaningful donation will cover the requests for assistance from cancer patients across the province who are facing financial difficulty as a result of a cancer diagnosis for the entire month of September.
“I couldn’t be more proud of the passion and long-lasting commitment our employees have for Power of Life and enhancing cancer care for patients and their families in our province. It’s been a remarkable 20 years and together we have seen the $5 million raised make a real difference in the lives of others,” says Paige London, Vice President, Finance and Chief Financial Officer, Newfoundland Power Inc. “Although we have made great progress and advancements in cancer care, the need is still great. Our $15,000 donation to the Patient and Family Support Fund is a meaningful way to support those who suddenly find themselves with additional expenses following their cancer diagnosis.”
Last year, over 400 cancer patients from communities throughout the province accessed this Fund for assistance with travel, accommodations, and meals. The Patient and Family Support Fund continues to see an increase in requests for support from cancer patients this year due to factors such as the rising cost of gas and inflation, with monthly requests averaging approximately $15,000 in the last quarter.
Lynette Hillier, Executive Director, Cancer Care Foundation, says, “We are so thankful for Power of Life and the support of Newfoundland Power’s employees, retirees and customers over the past 20 years. As we know, 1 in 2 people in Newfoundland and Labrador will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime – it impacts thousands of families in our province each and every day. Power of Life has been there to ensure that when you hear “You Have Cancer” that the best cancer treatment tools are available along with patient programs to assist you on your journey. Today’s gift will continue that vital support as cancer patients face mounting financial challenges in accessing cancer care. We thank Newfoundland Power and the dedication of their employees for their continued commitment to enhancing the lives of those living with cancer in our province.”
Power of Life is Newfoundland Power’s corporate charity and a partnership with the Cancer Care Foundation. The Project raises funds for cancer treatment equipment and support programs while promoting early detection and cancer screening through education and awareness programs. Since 2002, they have donated in excess of $5 million and helped many lives change for the better.
The Cancer Care Foundation raises funds for treatment and supportive care programs for cancer patients, funds local cancer research initiatives and provides continuing education opportunities for staff of the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre and affiliated cancer programs in Newfoundland and Labrador.
