Corner Brook, NL: Newfoundland Power employees in the Corner Brook area have donated a Sleeper Bed and Large Blanket Warmer for in-patient cancer patients at Western Memorial Regional Hospital on behalf of The Power of Life Project. This investment, worth almost $8,000, comes as a result of fundraising efforts by Newfoundland Power employees and retirees in the area.

“We’re pleased to be able to make this contribution on behalf of our employees, retirees, customers and partners,” says Gary Smith, President and Chief Executive Officer, Newfoundland Power. “Enhancing cancer treatment facilities and services in Newfoundland and Labrador has been an ongoing goal of The Power of Life Project and today we are proud to help support cancer patients in Corner Brook and the surrounding area.”

Lynette Hillier, Executive Director of the Cancer Care Foundation, says, “We are proud to join with Newfoundland Power in presenting this equipment for in-patient cancer patients. This is our first investment for equipment to be used in acute care at Western Memorial Regional Hospital. Our thanks to Western Regional Hospital Foundation, as partners on this project, for joining with us to enhance the lives of those living with cancer in our province.”

Suzanne Carey, Executive Director of the Western Regional Hospital Foundation says “Our Foundation is very pleased to partner with the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation and honoured to accept this donation from Newfoundland Power through The Power of Life Project. The impact that a new sleeper bed and blanket warmer will have on cancer in-patients and their families is priceless. This equipment decreases stress and provides a feeling of comfort and safety to patients, both extremely important tools in recovery and ones that the staff are very pleased to be able to offer thanks to the generosity of Newfoundland Power.”

The Power of Life Project is a partnership between Newfoundland Power and the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation. The Project raises funds for cancer treatment equipment and support programs while promoting early detection and cancer screening through education and awareness programs. Since 2002 they have donated in excess of $2.5 million and helped many lives change for the better.

The Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation raises funds for treatment and supportive care programs for cancer patients, funds local cancer research initiatives and provides continuing education opportunities for staff of the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre and affiliated cancer programs in Newfoundland and Labrador.
